چکیده

The Effects of Active Lifting and Contact Force Distribution on Weight Discrimination A thesis presented to the Psychology Department Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Benjamin A. Kramer The present experiment examined two questions pertaining to weight perception: 1) when objects are placed in a passively in the supported hands, does the distribution contact force from the object and from the supporting surface affect weight discrimination; and 2) does weight discrimination differ under conditions of passive support of the hand and active hefting? This study used ten subjects, and a standard adaptive staircase paradigm to measure the JND for weight discrimination. Each subject’s JND was measured in one active hefting condition and four conditions where weights were placed on their hands resting on a table. The four conditions involved different combinations of manipulations meant to widely distribute or focus the pressure of the object on the top of the hands or of the table on the bottom of the hands. All five active and passive conditions were repeated with a light weight (72g-84g) and heavy set (416g-510g), resulting in a total of ten conditions. JND’s were not affected by any of the different passive force distribution conditions. However, actively hefting the weights significantly reduced the JND relative to the passive conditions. Several hypotheses are discussed to explore the advantages of active hefting.

Developed endplate geometry for uniform contact pressure distribution over PEMFC active area

Contact resistance among the components of a polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has a crucial effect on cell performance. The geometry of the endplate plays an essential role in the contact pressure distribution over the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the amount of contact resistance between plates. In this work, the effects of endplate geometry on the contact pressure distribut...

Contact Force and Duration Effects on Static and Dynamic Tactile Texture Discrimination

Tactile roughness magnitude estimates increase with contact force. However, it is not known whether discrimination thresholds are affected by contact force and other parameters, such as duration and tangential movement. The effects of these factors on roughness discrimination thresholds were determined using an adaptive staircase procedure for coarse and fine texture discrimination during activ...

Glenohumeral contact forces and muscle forces evaluated in wheelchair-related activities of daily living in able-bodied subjects versus subjects with paraplegia and tetraplegia.

OBJECTIVE To estimate the differences in glenohumeral contact forces and shoulder muscle forces between able-bodied subjects and subjects with paraplegia and tetraplegia during wheelchair-related activities of daily living (ADLs). DESIGN Kinematics and external forces were measured during wheelchair ADLs (level propulsion, weight-relief lifting, reaching) and processed by using an inverse dyn...

The Effects of Negative Heel Rocker Shoes on the Moment and the Contact Forces Applied on Lower Limb Joints of Diabetic Patients During Walking

Purpose: The negative heel rocker shoes help reduce the plantar pressure in patients with diabetes, but their effects on the other lower limb joints are unknown. Accordingly, the current study aimed at evaluating the effect of negative heel rocker shoes on the moment and the contact forces applied on lower limb joints of diabetic patients while walking. Methods: A total of 10 patients with dia...
